Chalicists Notes:
- No
one in attendance request instruction but we did talk about a variety
of unusual circumstances that can arise. Some rules of thumb: Use the
same phraseology as the priest uses with the bread
- Remember that an adult who
is crossing his/her arms may want as little attention drawn as possible
so just pass by.
- Some
people look at us and others don’t. Regardless, always put your
smile/friendly face on since we are part of a celebration and you are
part of the communion. People look to us for assurance of God’s love.
- Generally never let go
completely of the cup but use common sense when a person takes control.
Its OK.
- If
a piece of the wafer drops into the wine, you may elect to leave it if
it is small or you may move to the altar where you may find a spoon or
where you can discreetly drink the chalice if its near empty and then
refill it.
- The Great Hall servers
are now being instructed to stand in front of the altar where they can
observe you and you can signal them to come and refill your cup.
Usher Notes:
If you were not present for
this training any of the clergy will be glad to meet with you.
- Ushers were
shown the locations for:
- heat and air
conditioning controls
- lights
- sound system
- breaker panels incase
of loss of power
- Ushers
for the 8:00 service were reminded to put the parking covers on the
meters as soon as they arrive. They generally have been put in place by
the clergy but this is not always the case.
- Ushers
for the 5:00 Saturday and the 10:30 AM nave service are to close all
the windows and lock the doors, and turn the AC off and lights off.
Please do not depend on the clergy or sexton to do this.
- Remember
to push on the far right hand (facing the church from Church St.) door
to the outside to ensure it is locked. Many people use this door to
exit and do not fully engage the latch
- Fire extinguishers have
been installed in the nave
- Please use your cell phone
for emergency calls but remember to put it in “vibrate” or only turn it
on for outgoing calls.
- If
people complain that they are cold from the AC you and your sense is
that the room is at the proper temperature, please suggest that they
move to another location just as they might in a restaurant to get away
from the air flow.
- Know where the
sound system breaker switch is located so you can turn it off in case
of malfunction or bleed in from other transmitters (on the breaker
panel near the rheostats for the lights in the nave).
Lector Notes:
All readers should consult
our readings page
each week to review the upcoming lectionary readings even when you are
not scheduled to read. You will never know when you may be called upon
to read because someone has failed to show up.
Please
take some time to understand the reading even consulting a commentary
or calling one of the clergy. We will have a "button" on the web site
soon that will take you to a commentary.
The
web site has a "button" that will lead you to the proper pages. The
staff will be working with our web master to increase the amount of
current information on this page including last minute changes so
please keep checking in.
At the end of
the Prayers of the People there is sometimes an awkward moment or two
because the clergy may try to interject a prayer and we may be awkward
of how we get back to our seat as the confession is introduced. The
rule is: Leave some space (silent count of 2 or so) after the prayers
before moving. If you move and the clergy inserts a prayer, please stop
in place and wait till the prayer is finished. The deacon will be
instructed to wait until you are at least near you seat before saying
the invitation to confession. Silence is good in a service.
In
the Great Hall, please dress neatly and if one of your children is
reading please ask them to dress appropriately and neatly as a respect
for the Word of God they are ministers of.
